Sync Blocks

By Docvora Assistant 3 mins 10

Sync Blocks allow the same content to be reused across multiple Docvora pages while maintaining a single source copy. They are useful for repetitive content that needs to remain consistent, including shared instructions, notices, tables, code, images and uploaded files.

Creating a Sync Block

A new Sync Block can be inserted from the editor toolbar or through the slash command menu.

Creating a Sync Block creates the source copy. Content can then be added inside the block using normal inline formatting and supported editor blocks.

A Sync Block can contain content such as:

  • Text and formatting

  • Images

  • Uploaded files

  • Tables

  • Code blocks

  • Information panels

  • Other supported editor content

Sync Blocks can also be given a name to make them easier to find when reused elsewhere.

Inserting an existing Sync Block

An existing Sync Block can be inserted from the toolbar or slash command menu.

When inserting an existing block, Docvora provides a searchable list of available Sync Blocks.

A source Sync Block can also be copied from the editor and pasted onto another page. The pasted version remains linked to the original source.

Synced content

Copies of a Sync Block act as mirrors of the source content.

When the source block is updated, changes are reflected automatically everywhere the block is used.

Uploaded files are also reused from the source rather than creating a separate copy for every page. This allows one uploaded file to be maintained while displaying it across multiple locations.

There is no fixed limit to the number of pages where a Sync Block can be used or the amount of content it can contain.

Editing Sync Blocks

Only the source Sync Block can be edited.

Mirrored blocks provide a link back to the source page so the original content can be located easily.

In the editor, Sync Blocks display an outline to distinguish them from normal page content.

On published pages, synced content appears as normal content without an additional Sync Block indicator.

Permissions and access

Sync Blocks do not have a separate permission type and use the existing page permissions.

Access to the source page determines whether the synced content can be used normally.

If access to the source page is restricted, mirrored locations display an error block instead of exposing the restricted content.

An account without access to the source page cannot edit the Sync Block from another page.

Deleting the source block

If the source Sync Block is deleted, existing mirrored copies are retained as static content.

These copies no longer receive updates because the original source no longer exists.

Content can also be copied out of a Sync Block and pasted as normal page content where a separate, non-synced version is required.

Nested Sync Blocks

A Sync Block cannot be placed inside another Sync Block.

When this is attempted, Docvora displays:

Synced blocks can't be placed inside another synced block.

Changes made to Sync Blocks are included in normal page version history.

Synced content is also indexed on each page where it appears, allowing it to be included in page search results.
